Is the Volkswagen ID.4 a Good Electric SUV?
Volkswagen ID.4: Is All-Electric Worth It?
The Volkswagen ID.4 is VW’s newest SUV, and as you may have heard, it’s all electric, made with practicality in mind. Voted the 2021 World Car of the Year by 93 distinguished international journalists from 28 countries that make up the World Car Awards jury panel, the ID.4 has certainly earned a lot of hype. But it the hype warranted? Is the VW ID.4 really worthy of being your first electric SUV?
The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 has been hogging the attention of many electric SUV enthusiasts recently: whether it’s the ride quality, roomy cabin, or competitive pricing, this new SUV is worth a look. and today’s post will dive into the specifics.
Volkswagen ID4 – Engine Performance
ID.4 sports an all-electric motor rather than a combustion engine and can be recharged at home or at public fast chargers, of which many are located in the Vancouver area.
Combined with a range of 400km, this means you’ll rarely have charge issues during your daily commutes or general activity around Metro Vancouver.
Single-Motor Rear-Wheel Drive
The Volkswagen ID.4 offers a choice of RWD or AWD.
Volkswagen ID.4’s lithium-ion battery delivers 82 kilowatt hours of power and 229 lb-ft of instant torque in its initial powertrain configuration. It takes eight seconds for an electric vehicle in this category to go from 0-100 km/h, but it is impressive for an SUV.
In the Volkswagen ID4 vehicle with a single motor, the EPA estimated range is approximately 400km. A small battery powers this device compared to some of its competitors, which have larger batteries.
Magnetic Motor Power
In the all-new 2021 Volkswagen ID.4, a permanent single electric motor powers the rear wheels and produces 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque.
The quietness of the EV keep it appealing despite its less sharp handling compared to many others. Moreover, the all-wheel-drive model of the ID.4, which will be the more common option in Canada, is guaranteed to reach 100 km/h in less than five seconds.
This vehicle’s rear-wheel drive layout makes acceleration slightly delayed, but its handling is good. Because it is rear-wheel drive, it can handle tight corners and twisty backroads with a balanced feeling, while tracking and centering predictably.
Also, you can move with sufficient speed and it appears to have good grace, even if it is not very sharp.
The ID.4’s regenerative brake captures energy when it slows in its most aggressive mode of regenerative braking. This electric car does not offer one-pedal driving.
Steering and accelerator responses vary slightly between the four modes (Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Custom). When the brake pedal is released, the B mode produces more regenerative braking than Drive. Following a slight lift off the brake pedal, the ID.4 gradually gains momentum.
At the front, there is a subframe for mounting the engine, and at the rear, there are struts that support the suspension and powertrain. Within the turning circle, there is a distance of about 33.6 feet between curb to curb.
Volkswagen ID.4 – Battery
On the floor, under the passenger, is a large liquid-cooled battery pack. 82 kWh of usable energy can be obtained with this pack of 288 lithium-ion battery pouch cells arranged in 12 modular configurations.
In addition to being heavier due to the battery pack, which weighs approximately 1,067 pounds, the ID.4 1st Edition is 4.600 pounds in weight.
Electric Battery Charging
Charging at 11 kW takes 38 minutes to charge from 5 to 80%. Volkswagen’s funded the Electrify Canada and Electrify America network which offers public DC fast charging stations for owners to charge the electric SUV at 125 kW. Electrify Canada is also offering free charging for three years to new Volkswagen ID.4 owners.
Canada is home to a large selection of public DC fast charger stations that allow the ID4 to be charged within just a few hours, with many of these in BC, and more being added as electric vehicles grow in popularity.
The new I.D.4 will allow the drivers to maintain a smooth and efficient driving experience while using the infotainment system or answering incoming calls. While continually using features like the infotainment system, keeping up good charging habits can prevent you from running out of battery while on the road.
Volkswagen ID.4 – Interior
It’s easier to use the steering wheel, and voice commands offer lots of potential for those who are patient enough to learn them.
The ID.4 is spacious for its size, with front legroom about equal to the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Being an electric SUV, there is plenty of space with less clutter as other vehicles. This provides more comfort to passengers in the front.
Although the ID.4 is a compact, it offers an impressive amount of space and good visibility as well as excellent noise insulation and sturdy materials.
VW’s ID.4 has been hailed in many publications for its spaciousness, large storage , removable cup holders, and flat back seat floor while driving. The Statement package includes a panoramic roof that creates an even greater sense of space.
The tall design allows five adults to fit comfortably in the back, with 37.6 inches of leg room. It has a transmission tunnel, but rather than the type of middle seats found in the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4, the ID.4’s middle seats are more comfortable.
A five-seater all-electric ID.4 with comfortable accommodations, a roomy cabin, and an electric motor.
This ID.4 has a functional interior that is both functional and comfortable. Furthermore, VW’s leatherette (imitation leather) seats included memory, massage, and four-way lumbar adjustment.
With its door bins, the center console has a lot of deep storage space.
In the VW ID.4, passengers can create more legroom by folding the rear seats. Volkswagen owners can fold forward the third row of rear seats, creating nearly flat space that allows them to add a large amount of legroom to their trunks.
The cargo floor has a compartment that unfolds and slides forward to be accessed.
In spite of its extremely short length and competitive occupant space, the ID.4 offers impressive cargo capacity.
Loading merchandise is easy due to the spacious cargo space under the liftgate and bilevel cargo floor. A pass-through and a center armrest are standard features on higher trim levels compared with the 60/40 folding backseat.
Other electric vehicles have front trunks, but the ID.4 does not: however it still enjoys more volume anyway.
Based on manufacturer specifications, a folded back seat on a Ford Mustang Mach-E provides 59.7 cubic feet of cargo space, while a folded ID.4 offers 64.2 cubic feet. The Volkswagen ID.4 offers a lot more cargo space than other electric SUV models.
Another aspect of ID.4 that stands out is its climate controls. Additionally, you can add an energy-saving climate control system to the steering wheel and the seats.
You can control the cabin temperature remotely via the Car-Net app while driving. The driving range does not need to be wasted in this manner.
